Raw Mango Chutney | Kaacha Aamer Chaatni

One of the best things about summer in India is the abundance of mangoes! Walking into a fruit store these days makes me feel like a kid in the candy store – so many varieties of mangoes to choose from! My father tends to go overboard while mango shopping but thanks to my mother, we don’t end up covering every surface at home with the ‘king of fruits’. The mango crop in Gujarat has been a little unsatisfactory this year, says my father and the newspapers. But that doesn’t seem to have stopped the average Gujarati – and by that, I mean any person living in this Indian state –…

Indian Butterfish Curry | Pabda Maacher Jhol

I’ve got to start with a random confession… or confessions. It took me a while to figure out what pabda maachis called in English and with it came the realization that despite having grown up with the privilege of speaking and understanding 4 languages, I am not very good at either. Maa helped me fry the fish because all that spluttering and splattering scared the life out of me! Since I’ve just returned from Sri Lanka, the ideal situation would see me sharing some Sri Lankan recipes with you. I do intend to! I always did! Why else would I pester A into helping me pester accessible chefs into sharing a…

Golden Sweet Balls with Yoghurt | Doi Boonde

Those of you familiar with the food recipe I’m sharing today are probably having a good laugh at the translation of the name. And you should! I’ve been chuckling since I translated ‘Doi Boonde’ or ‘Dahi Boondi’ into ‘Golden Sweet Balls with Yoghurt’. I’m honestly at a loss for words here. The emotional connect with the delicious, crispy and sweet boonde are lost when I call them ‘golden sweet balls’ but what is the option? Where are the words that describe the rush of memories at the mention of making boonde at home? How does one translate the delight that used to fill this little girl’s eyes when they spotted the heap of boonde at the…

    Memory String 2018 Unravelled #2

Beat this now! I’m getting better at planning! I actually managed to time the second part of my ‘best of 2018’ and am publishing it on the last day of the year! I could go on and on about how amazing it feels but let’s keep it short and sweet today. It is a Monday, several of us are battling the Monday blues with the added shot of sad coz who wants to work on a Monday when you know you are going to party the night into the New Year! Depressing much? I’m going to ring in 2019 with my friends-more-than-family. It’ll be a night of music, dance and…

    Memory String 2018 Unravelled #1

It’s been a few days since the giveaway was announced. The winners have been declared and handed over their loot. While in the process of putting together bags for the giveaway winners, I decided to send out a few to friends who’ve been a rock for me in the past year; and some to people who’ve inspired me time and again. So amid the planning, backing, packing and delivery, I’m a little run down and just about ready for the weekend; or to await the beginning of the New Year. But no complaints because this is the good kind of tired – the kind where your back hurts because you’ve…

Here’s a little glimpse into what they’d be getting: Travel Memory String – 12 frames for 12 months. An all round…

    Gift yourself a travel diary

A week ago, I did a few interesting things: I (finally!) started work on a ‘history journal’ project that had been given to me three months ago. I was supposed to have given it two months ago but then life happened, priorities were shifted and the project landed on the backburner. I attended a “solo female travellers’ meet” in my city and met a bunch of interesting people, learned some lessons from more experienced solo travellers and answered questions of some planning to take the plunge. It was during the discussions here that someone raised the point of “clicking photographs to remember the trip” or “writing a travel diary” to remember the…
